The 2019 Los Angeles Young Musicians International Competition is open to young pianists of any nationality, age up to 28. The first prize winners of previous Los Angeles Young Musicians International Competitions or Los Angeles International Piano Competitions are ineligible to participate in the same categories of the Competition.

1. APPLICATION

The complete application form and all required documents should be postmarked by June 30, 2019 . Applications are not considered complete until all documents and fees have been received by the administration of the competition. The application fees is $80 for categories A, B; $100 for categories C, D, E; $120 for categories F, G. The application fees are non-refundable. 

2. COMPETITION CATEGORIES

The 2019 Piano Competition has seven categories.

A. Up to 7 years of age
B. 8 - 9 years of age
C. 10 -11 years of age
D. 12-13 years of age
E. 14-15 years of age
F. 16-18 years of age
G. 19 - 28 years of age

The contestants in each category must be of qualifying age on August 1, 2019.

With your application form, you must submit one copy of a proof of age document (passport or other legal document) and two current photos .

3. COMPETITION ROUND FOR CATEGORIES A, B, C, D, E.

The Competition consists of a Preliminary round and a Final round.

I. Preliminary Round (by current Youtube, mp4, or other format of music recording )

The recording may include the same or different pieces which will be played in the final live competition round. Recordings should be labeled with the title of the piece(s) and composer name(s) in the order of performance, with exact time of each composition.

List of applicants who entered the final round will be posted on the website.

Accepted applicants should come to the opening ceremony on August 2, 2019 to listen to the important announcement and draw a number to choose their own order of performance.

II.  Final Live Competition Round

The program may include the same or different pieces played in the Preliminary round.

Final results will be posted on the website.

All winners must be present at the Award Ceremony and Winners Concert to receive the awards. 

4. COMPETITION ROUND FOR CATEGORIES F, G.

The competition consists of Preliminary round, Semi-Final and Final round.

I.  Preliminary Round (by current Youtube, mp4, or other format of music recording)

The recording may include the same pieces which will be played in the semi-final live competition round. Recordings should be labeled with the title of the piece(s) and composer name(s) in the order of performance, with exact time of each composition.

List of applicants who are accepted into the semi-final round will be posted on the website.

Accepted applicants should come to the opening ceremony on August 2, 2019 to listen to the important announcement and draw a number to choose their own order of performance.

II.  Semi-Final Live Competition Round

The Semi-Final round program may include the same pieces played in the Preliminary Round. The Semi-Final auditions for groups F and G will take place on August 3-4, 2019.

Contestants from groups E and F who will proceed to the final round will be notified through an email message right after the judges' decision and they will compete in the Final Round on August 6-8, 2019.

III.  Final Live Competition Round

The Final round program may include the same pieces played in the Preliminary Round, but not repeated work from the Semi-final round. 

Final results will be posted on the website.

All winners must be present at the Award Ceremony and Winners Concert to receive the awards.

5. REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS

A, up to 7 years of age,

Performance time limited: 7 Minutes

Two rounds: Preliminary round of screening and Final round of live competition.

One or two pieces in contrasting styles, free choice from the standard repertoire (Baroque, Classical, Romantic or Contemporary)

Preliminary round and Final round program: Preliminary round program might include the same or different music piece(s) of Final.

B, 8-9 years of age,

Performance time limited: 9 Minutes

Two rounds: Preliminary round of screening and Final round of live competition.

Two or more pieces in contrasting styles, free choice from the standard repertoire (Baroque, Classical, Romantic or Contemporary)

Preliminary round and Final round program: Preliminary round program might include the same or different music piece(s) of Final.

C, 10-11 years of age,

Performance time limited: 12 Minutes

Two rounds: Preliminary round of screening and Final round of live competition.

Two or more pieces in contrasting styles, free choice from the standard repertoire (Baroque, Classical, Romantic or Contemporary)

Preliminary round and Final round program: Preliminary round program might include the same or different music piece(s) of Final.

D, 12-13 years of age,

Performance time limited: 15 Minutes

Two rounds: Preliminary round of screening and Final round of live competition.

Two or more pieces in contrasting styles, free choice from the standard repertoire (Baroque, Classical, Romantic or Contemporary)

Preliminary round and Final round program: Preliminary round program might include the same or different music piece(s) of Final.

E, 14-15 years of age,

Performance time limited: 20 Minutes  

Two rounds: Preliminary round of screening and Final round of live competition.

Two or more pieces in contrasting styles, free choice from the standard repertoire (Baroque, Classical, Romantic or Contemporary)

Preliminary round and Final round program: Preliminary round program might include the same or different music piece(s) of Final.

F, 16-18 years of age,

Performance time limited: Semi-final 20 Minutes, Final 25 Minutes  

Three rounds: Preliminary round of screening and Semi-final and Final round of live competitions.

Preliminary round requires two or more pieces. The program of Preliminary round may include the same or different pieces to be played in the Semi-final round or Final round.

Semi-final program requires two or more pieces in contrasting styles, one virtuoso etude, one sonata-allegro movement by Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven, the others are free choices.

Final round program are free choices with two or more pieces in contrasting styles from the standard repertoire (Baroque, Classical, Romantic or Contemporary)

Preliminary round, Semi-final & Final round program: Preliminary round may include the same or different music pieces of Semi-final or Final, Final round program should not include any repeated work from Semi-final.

G, 19-28 years of age,

Performance time limit: Preliminary 25 Minutes, Semi-final 30 Minutes, Final 45 Minutes

Three rounds: Preliminary round of screening and Semi-final and Final round of live competitions.

Preliminary round requires two or more pieces, one fast virtuoso etude, one sonata-allegro movement by Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven, the other is of free choice.

The program of Preliminary round may include the same or different pieces to be played in the Semi-final round or Final round.

Semi-final round program is of free choice with two or more pieces in contrasting styles from the standard repertoire (Baroque, Classical, Romantic or Contemporary)

Final round program is of free choice from the standard repertoire (Baroque, Classical, Romantic or Contemporary)

Preliminary round, Semi-final & Final round program: Preliminary round may include the same or different music pieces of Semi-final or Final, Final round program should not include any repeated work from Semi-final.

6. RECORDING

It is suggested to include a current performance Youtube, mp4, or other format of music records to the competition administration to provide a recording of high quality and to ensure the recording format is playable on standard players. (The current performance should be up to six months prior to the competition.)

7. INTERNATIONAL CONTESTANTS

International applicants should consult with the nearest American Embassy or Consulate for visas. The Los Angeles Young Musician International Competition will send an official letter of invitation. The official invitation letter will be sent via e-mail, and the original copy will be sent by regular mail. Express mail can be requested for an additional $30. The official letters will only be provided to the applicant after his or her application has been completed and accepted.

8. JURY

The jury has the right to stop the contestants during the performance if the playing time is expanded or in any other necessary cases.

Jury members will disclose the information of the competitors who have studied with them in the past five years or who are going to study with them following the competition. Jury members will be asked to recuse themselves not submitting a score for those students, which is appropriately in order to maintain the integrity of the voting process.

The decisions of the jury on the Preliminary round, First round, Semi-final, and the Final round will be final.

9. WINNER'S AWARDS

All winners of the Los Angeles Young Musician International Competitions must be present in the Awards Ceremony and Winners Concert in order to receive the awards.

The first prize winner in each category will perform in the Winner's Concert.
